Summer 2017 is gonna be off the charts… in so many ways. I am getting ready for weeks and weeks of adventure, sunshine and as little work as humanly possible. I already shared all of my beauty picks for this month (click here if you missed it) but let’s turn our attention to another important question – what are we going to wear all summer?! In the interest of fiscal responsibility, I have found some of the best deals and fashion short-cuts for you (and frankly, for me)!
Before anyone calls me out for spouting all of this fiscal responsibility lately and then blogging all about buying stuff for the summer – pump the breaks and hold your horsies… I promised a balance between fiscal responsibility and fun. This is not all about doing what is the most frugal at the expense of having a fabulous summer… you can have your rosé and drink it too (obvi). All of my favorites (beauty, fashion and accessories) are the perfect balance between quality and price – and finding the best deals on these is a serious hobby of mine, you’re welcome!
This post contains affiliate links – which means I have scoured the internet looking for the best bang for your buck on the products and sites which I love the very most – and yes, this means that I get a little something extra for my time, but it doesn’t cost you anything extra!
This is my latest addiction – It has only been three weeks but I feel like this might be a love to last a lifetime. Rent the Runway, which you may have heard of, has been renting cocktail dresses, black tie gowns and all sorts of fancy outfits for years now. But they have expanded their amazing concept to everyday work wear, jewelry, casual dresses and purses – at the same time, they have also created an Unlimited option. For $140 a month, you can select up to three pieces to keep for as long or as short as you want – send in all three, choose three more, send in two, pick two more, etc., etc. Shipping is free and you can return/pick new options as much as you want. In three weeks, I have received 10 items (totaling a retail price of over $2500 – insane) – some were for a weekend away in DC and a super-hot weekend in NYC, but most of the time I use it for work and going out.
For you local ladies in New York, the huge added plus for the Unlimited program is that you can pop over to their store in Soho, return your items and pick up new ones. The turn-around time in NYC (when shipping) is literally 48 hours… which means my return gets sent on Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday morning I pick out my new items and Thursday I have all my new stuff! I have a bestie in DC who uses this and her turn-around time is a smidge longer – 2-3 days, still not too bad.
My grandma thinks this is ridiculous – why would anyone want to wear clothes other people have worn? Well, I like to mix up my wardrobe so often (I suffer from FADD – fashion attention deficit disorder) that doing so can be financially IRRESPONSIBLE, particularly when I like things that usually are more expensive (ugh, such a burden to have such amazing taste). I also like to try new things, latest trends and outrageous items for which I would never pay a substantial amount of money. For example, I want a plethora of off the shoulder ruffles for this summer… do I need more than one top or one dress? No. Are people going to be wearing this next summer? Who knows? How many rompers does one person need to actually own? I think the answer is 15 but I have been told by the Enemy of Fun that it is actually 2 (what does he know?!). Moral of the story – renting instead of buying means I get to look my best, feel amazing and save myself a bit of money – win, win, win. Click here to give it a try – you can cancel anytime!
But if you prefer to buy your summer fashion rather than rent, I have some options for you too!
I have been a fan for years (even before they began shipping internationally). Some of my best work clothes are from RueLaLa sales – Tahari, Alice & Olivia, Theory, BCBG, MaxMara, the list goes on and on. Everything is hyper-discounted but the downside is that there is limited availability and sizes. You also have to check every day (or create an account and save your favorite brands so you know when they are coming on sale). It is a much better alternative to having to dig around Nordstrom Rack or Saks Off Fifth. So if you absolutely have to buy fancy designers, do it here.
This small family owned and operated Midwestern company is cranking out some of the best basics on the market AND they are all reasonably priced! (SO EXCITING) Not only is a great to support small businesses but also it is so nice to find unique clothing that isn’t mass produced for every big designer and department store.
Three of my favorites from their current line are perfect for summer:
Gah, I love love love a new swimsuit – it’s like fresh stationary and the smell of sharpened pencils in the fall. You know when you get a new swimsuit that summer is on! I am obsessed with anything high-waisted right now and I am loving all floral and nautical prints… I can’t pick just one. Luckily I have dug up some reasonably priced, stunning and high quality options for you. They come in all shapes and sizes – enjoy!
I have given you just a little insight into how I am planning my beauty and fashion this summer, but there is more… we haven’t even managed to turn to shoes, hats, sunglasses, towels and all the other summer paraphernalia! Stay tuned… it’s coming your way very, very soon!
